The plantar fascial band is a very strong band of tissue that originates from the heel and splits into fives segments before inserting into the toes. This band forms the medial longitudinal arch of the foot, providing static support and shock absorption. Plantar fasciitis is an overuse syndrome loosely defined as an ‘inflammatory’ condition.
Causes:
- High arched feet
- Flat feet
- Activities like running or dancing
- Inappropriate footwear
- Weight gain and obesity are risk factors
- Tight calf and Achilles structures are also risk factors
- Biomechanical abnormalities: supinating or pronating gait
Signs and Symptoms:
- Pain begins gradually
- Pain starts on the inside of the heel- just into the arch area
- Pain is worse in the morning and decreases with activity
- Pain after long periods of standing
- Pain after rest
- As the condition worsens, pain remains during weight bearing and worsens with activity
- Tender heel and arch
- Plantar fascial band is tight
Treatment:
- Rest- avoid activity
- Ice area
- Anti-inflammatories
- Stretching of plantar fascia and other tight structures
- Massage arch
- Taping
- Your podiatrist may prescribe orthotics to correct biomechanical problems
- Good footwear
- Physiotherapy
Plantar fasciitis is a very common disorder that is easily diagnosed by a podiatrist. Treatment can involve many of the above and treatment may be a lengthy process.
